TESTING SOLUTION METHOD: This testing method is ideally used on unfinished gold, silver and platinum pieces, due to the harsh nature of the solution that could potentially damage an already finished item; however, if testing fine jewelry or other finished items, choose an inconspicuous spot so as not to compromise finishing
TESTING FOR GOLD: To test for karat content or purity, scratch the item on to the test stone leaving a visible deposit, then place a small drop of the solution over top of deposit; if gold is the same karat or higher the solution will not affect the deposit; if the deposit is of a lower karat, the deposit will dissolve
TESTING FOR PLATINUM: For platinum repeat the same process as above; if the material is pure platinum, the deposit will not be affected and the solution will not change
TESTING FOR SILVER: For silver, repeat the same process as above; if the material is of high quality silver, the solution will turn bright red; if the solution turns blue or green the sample may contain brass or copper; if the sample deposit dissolves quickly, or the solution turns a dark brown or yellow, it is likely a base metal
